Duties and Responsibilities: Optician is trained to give out lenses and other optical aids. Dispensing opticians advise patients on various types of lenses and spectacle frames, including advice on style, weight and color. They also advise patients on how to wear and care for their spectacles and, with further training as contact lens opticians (CLOs), their contact lenses.

Education: Many opticians go to college for a two-year associate’s degree in optician, which involves coursework in basic anatomy, eye anatomy, algebra and trigonometry, optical physics and mathematics and administration. They also learn about precision measuring equipment and techniques and optical instrumentation. More advanced studies include classes on fitting contact lens and vision prosthetics.
